The Relationship Check-up

The Relationship Checkup is a unique 3-session program being provided by Franco Psychological Associates (FPA), which provides couples with a comprehensive assessment of their relationship strengths and weaknesses as well as a structure for improving communication skills and balance within their relationship. Based on the scientifically developed PREPARE-ENRICH curriculum for premarital and marital couples, this informative and educational program offered at FPA will help couples understand the current state of their relationship and give them a roadmap for how to make improvements.

The couple will participate in 3 one-hour meetings with a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), complete a customized on-line assessment (taken by each partner) and receive a summary report complete with helpful charts and suggestions. The fee for the entire 3-session program is $275*.

The Relationship Checkup will enable couples to:

• Explore strength and growth areas
• Strengthen communication skills
• Resolve conflict
• Develop a more balanced relationship
• Explore family of origin issues

Session 1: An introductory meeting with the MFT to gather information about relationship history, current issues, and family relationships. A personal genogram (map of family relationships) will be constructed, in addition to the couple’s relationship timeline and history. The therapist will explore the relationship dynamics of the couple, explain the on-line assessment and schedule the next visit. On-line assessment (taken by each partner) should be completed after Session 1 and before Session 2 (at least 48 hours prior to Session 2).

Session 2: In this session, the therapist will discuss the results of the on-line assessment; provide the couple with an overview of the relationship strength and growth areas and the couple typology. The Couple and Family Map will be presented and discussed with focus on the specific concerns and needs of the couple.

Session 3: The focus of this session is to discuss the current Relationship Dynamics based on the assessment and address specific questions and concerns. Some skill-building exercises will be provided to improve communication skills and help resolve conflicts. A plan for future work can be discussed.

Just like a regular visit to a physician serves to keep people healthy and catch problems to be addressed, the Relationship Checkup will provide couples with the same opportunity.
